The NISS Diagnostic identified a key challenge related to inconsistent academic advising. Temple has made strides toward establishing a standardized approach to advising and has implemented EAB Navigate360. However, processes, procedures, and caseloads continue to vary widely across schools and colleges. As a result, data indicate decreasing retention and graduation rates, frequent major changes in the second year or later, and a high rate of students who transfer or stop out within six years.
The Recommendation
Standardize advising systems, training, and practices for professional and faculty advisors to ensure students receive consistent and proactive support across all programs and departments.
Actions:
- Establish and empower an Academic Advising Council to align advising practices and training across campus.
- Ensure all Temple students receive a standard of care that includes timely and proactive outreach based on degree maps and early alerts.
- Standardize the use of technologies and strategies across advising units.
Alignment:
Academic Advising is aligned with Forward with Purpose through the Student Success priority. In particular, this recommendation supports the Foster Holistic Student Development principle through the Proactive Advising project.
